There are many more features in 3.x that will be available to jackrabbit

yes, 3.x is backward compatible but 4.x won't be. I think it's not an important 
issue now because as you pointed developers can use a newer version without 
breaking things.  I have no strong position on this as long as the newer 
versions don't break things, that's why I created this issue as a minor wish :)
