The "politically correct" way is to do cvs remove on the individual files
in the directory, and then do the same on the directory itself.  As long
as you do "cvs update -dP" or equivalent, you won't see the old
directories, but the old contents are still accessible (because they are
stored in the attic) to specialized searches such as "grab me all the
files that were in this repository on 09-April-2001".
