I can't speak for anyone else, but I think that idea of creating an 
implementation of java.net.HttpURLConnection using HttpClient underneath is 
a pretty good one.

To Jon's point about "wrapping" HttpClient, I don't think that's too weird 
in this case.  The point of HttpClient is to provide more robust support and 
finer-grained control over the HTTP protocol than java.net.* does.  But in 
some cases, perhaps all one needs is the "more robust support".
