Chiang Mai, August 19th 2004

In the last reflection, I wrote the important role and
responsibility of the community leaders in any levels
to communicate and organize true information to their
community. It is pity to the people if the information
to the people is only few and cant be clarified. How
if the information is wrong, or manipulated by any
interest? We in Indonesia have bad experience and
history during the President Soeharto era (1966-1998).
The regime do cencorship, and banned many national
magazines and newspapers, brought the editors to court
and sent them to the prison although they wrote a true
facts and balance opinion about the real condition of
our country. An ecumenical movement in the 21st
century must be aware to the global information and
issues. Ninan Koashis reflections shows me a lot the
propaganda and manipulation by American (and the
world) mass-media to support President bush and
USAs policy in the war to the people of Afghanistan
and Iraq.

***

The last Saturday exposure is my next
reflection. After discoveryu of HIV/AIDS, the disease
becomes global threat in 1980-ties, spreading to every
people and nations in the world. And Thailand is the
worst among the Asian countries. We had exposure on
the Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT) AIDS Ministry
and Theravada Buddhist Monastry in the Northern Chiang
Mai. We visited two families who has persons with
HIV/AIDS in their homes. Because less of information
and misunderstood, many communities and also families
take a distance, even to isolate the people who has
HIV/AIDS. Visiting their homes and hearing their story
reminded me the same case in Indonesia history: The
case of Indonesian 1965 tragedy. After 39 years, the
government and many communities in Indonesia still use
communist label in the same way the Thai community
do to the people who has HIV/AIDS!

I finished my study with a minimum
knowledge about communism, although the Indonesian
Communist Party was the big party in Indonesia before
year 1965. During my childhood, discussing the 1965
tragedy is a taboo, even in our private home. On 1965
there is a decree that banned communism, marxism,
teaching of the topic, and banning all of activities
among the communist organization in the whole country.
I am a product of the Soeharto era, and we are
educated to accept the situation without question.

But my pastoral work brought me to see the
real situation among the people. I met many families
(both in or outside the congregation) who suffered
very much because they have a label as coomunist
member in their identity. They are fired from their
job, even their children is banned to work in
military, police or government offices and companies.
I learn to do solidarity with them, secretly. And the
time is come when the President Soeharto lost his
power in the May 1998 riots.

            The contemporary research on Indonesian
1965 history shows the role of USA and CIA that
provocate some leaders and soldiers to kidnap and kill
6 generals army on October 1st 1965, and then the USA
(by the hand of CIA) supported General Soeharto and
his army to take over the power from the former
president: Soekarno, and annihilate all communist
power in Indonesia. Under Soekarno, Indonesia
initiated the movement among Asia and Africa
countries, to cooperate and fight to colonialsm of
western countries. In 1962 Indonesia left out its
membership from United Nations and emerged a New
Emerging Forces among the Asia and Africa nations fo
tace the challenge of USA (and western countries,
especially British) denomination. Indonesia built a
close relationship with China, the big enemy of USA in
Asia beside Russia in Europe because they are
communist. President Soekarno rejected to cooperate
with the USA, so the USA supported many trials to take
over the Soekarno position.

I deliberately do not use the government
term to refer the case as the Communist Rebellion
1965 but I prefer to write it as The Indonesian 1965
Tragedy. Many documents from CIA and USA archives are
opened now, and show clearly that foreign policy of
the USA plan to annihilate the Indonesia Communist
Party, the biggest communist party after Rusia and
China. So behind the screen, the USA support arms and
fund during the massacre of more than two millions
people of Indonesia in 1965-1968 because they are
communist party members. And until 1980 thousands
political prisoner were kept in Nusakambangan Island
prison, and then Buru Island, without legal procedure
by court. Even until 1999, a year after Soeharto lost
his power, there are several political prisoner of the
1965 tragedy are released from long-life and death
sentence.

I began to write the story of the victims
of 1965 tragedy in my area on 2002. Even after the
Soeharto era, the witnesses of the 1965 tragedy are
kept silent and aftaid to tell their own experience
and version about their cases. They were detained and
jailed withoud trial, because they were accused to be
member of the Communist Party. So the common knowledge
in the community about the 1965 tragedy is come from
the government and authority version. And it is the
version of the winner party. The authority has the
legal and the only version of the 1965 tragedy. So it
makes the young generation do not know their own
national history beside the legal, the only and the
manipulated version from the authority. On the other
side, millions children of the families who labeled as
communist member confused and hide their identity
because the oppression of the authority. This
condition contributes to manipulation of history, to
serve the political interest of the no-democracy and
injustice authority.

I wrote many interviews during my personal
research on 1965 tragedy. My status as a local pastor
help me to be acceptable by any one in my area. So I
can interview ex-political party leader during the
era, ex-military officers, ex-chief village, and
witnesses of the massacre and tragedy in my area.
There is a cemetery in my neighborhood, and I am very
surprised when a witness give his testimony for me: I
dug and buried 126 victims of 1965 massacre in this
cemetery. Also another witness: I guide them from
truck before they were shot in this graveyard. Nobody
has noted their testimony until I came and documented
them.

***

I share my inquiries on the Indonesian
1965 tragedy through internet and mail-list. By
internet, I can introduced to many Indonesian people
abroad. They cant go back to their country after the
1965 tragedy. Also by internet, I can write the
personal and oral history of the people who become
victims on the 1965 tragedy, and review them in the
framework of our national history, and also in the
global perspective. And now in this reflection I want
to share: What a terible thing the globalization can
do! Our national history record 1965 tragedy and the
involvement of USA on it. Also the USA supported the
intervention of Indonesia to East Timor on 1976
because the communist party in East Timor Fretilin
won the election, and in 1999 after there is no
communist threat the USA (by Australia troops) who
support the independence of East Timor from Indonesia,
by hundred thousands victims of Indonesia and East
Timor peoples!. Now, the year 2004, after the USA
become the only Empire and Super Power in the world,
after Afghanistan and Iraq, what will they do? An
ecumenical movement should absorb the experience of
the people in the grass-root level to sharpen their
solidarity and struggle together, among and with the
people.

***

I learn from the experience of Minjung and
Dalit people. And what I do is to build awareness to
the people, that although the authority has their
truth, the people has their own stories and truth
on it. And reflecting the authority truth and the
people truth will make the real truth become clear.
Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life,
and You will be my true disciples if you keep my
word. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will
make you free (Gospel of John). The demonic power of
the authoritarian use the information to serve their
interest, and they build their truth to serve their
interest. And I am trying to do the same kind of
liberation theology in my ministry as a local pastor,
as a story-writer of the people, to liberate their own
history and understanding facing the chalengges of our
era.

I have made a reflection on peasants
organization in the agriculture deacon program of my
church and the network for autonomous people group. I
find that the ministry among the peasants is also an
effort to find the alternatif way facing the
globalization. By organic agriculture, the peasants
will be independence and autonomous because the
orientation of the organic agriculture is not to the
market, but first for daily consumption of the family,
the local neighborhood, and the rest is to bargain
with the market. More than that the organic method
saves and conserves the land and soil for sustainable
agriculture, healthy product to consumpt, and builds
people organization among the peasants to bargain the
government policy on the agriculture development.

There are  many problems in our ministry relate with
globalization as: urbanization, children education,
partnership between rural and city, but they are other
topics to write after.
