Who is your audience? Some advances developers that that want to do
more complex things then the to-be register-interface supports. They
should (and will read) the AN. And if you provide a nice example with
comment about each state, you can number the states similar to the AN
and avoid 
just_not_clear_enough_function_names_to_write_such_a_complex_program_without_documentation()
type function names ;)

So if you aks me:
- use simple names (state numbers, maybe with short name)
- name the AN often enough
- add comment in the example.
