KiCAD is the best alternative to the free version of Eagle. Is a
complete open-source suite. It wold be a gain if boards and schematics
are delivered in this format. Works under Linux and Win (the Mac
version have big problems). Is even easy to draw a schematic than in
Eagle and it have a very nice part editor.

As a separate pcb layout program in Linux (it have versions for Win
and Mac) the best is PCB designer. gschem from gEDA is not a good
alternative.

For pdf tutorials where breadboards are used, and you don't have your
camera at hand, Fritzing is a convenient alternative.
