Each nibble is value 0..9, so two digits are stored per character or
byte.

I hate to mention VB6 again, but it has oddity that from serial port
if data *MIGHT* be only one byte or two, it works better to read into
a string than the normal dynamic byte array. Then you can unpack the
BCD(s) later.

the only interesting thing about the BSTR type in VB6 is that the size
of the array is actually stored in the -1 element if you regard arrays
as zero indexed.
Actually all the VB string functions index from 1, not zero, though by
default an array declaration is from 0

We don't want 16bit characters at all really, except for maybe Chinese
and Japanese. Cryrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and I think possibly
Korean, Thai and Hindi (correct me if I'm wrong) can be accommodated
just with a different font table. At a pinch you can even do Roman (96
Chars)+ Other (128 Chars) at same time.

So I see no difficulty with ignoring Nulls and being language / script/
font agnostic with 8bit character based string arrays, that can easily
be interchanged with bytes/byte array and have Asc() and Chr()
function compatible with byte, word etc. Packed binary coded decimal
in strings/Characters is common thing since forever. (since 1973 for
me). I'm glad however to be buying 10 to 15 Eur approx 128x64 GLCDs
for text rather than designing crazy logic gates to do a terrible
alphabet font on a seven segment display!

I can't see me using text only LCDs anymore unless very short of pins
and space. At present the 1/4VGA 320x240 colour LCD + controller even
without touch brings cost to about 30 Euro to 45 Euro? Big step,
whereas the simple KS0107 GLCD is not much different in cost and size
to 16x2 text LCD?

Also given cost for small volume I can't see reason to use
16F877/16F887 /16F628 any more compared to 18F4550 / 18F2550? Or am I
missing some vital point?
