You mean the folk don't just buy another TV now? In the 1980s in the near by city about 6 places repaired TVs. Now none do. You can buy a new DVD player for less than it costs to pay a real Engineer to take the cover off. We still have a couple of "computer" & phone repair shops. But they don't fix anything, just swap cracked screen or failed HDD.
