Hi Matt @all I have proposed since a long time ago to set up an international conference (with real papers and real reviewers, etc) talking about jal projects on different topics (as toys, development tools, learning, scientific applications, industrial applications, hardware and software, etc). However, when I've asked, people said they aren't involved in "research" probably because they don't know what research is and don't want to participate to such conference. A conference is a higher level of "show" and is initiated with a calls for papers (and a lot of organizing trouble which must be solved by the owners). A paper is structured following some well defined rules (somehow as those Rob introduced at jallib) and every paper is read at least by two reviewers which are accepting or declining the papers based on those rules. When paper is accepted, the author must pay his participation tax, which gives the right of be present there. Most conferences had a program based usually on a three day schedule (usually in the weekend), including a cocktail, a restaurant meal and a social event (a trip).
