There should be a significant decrease in time when the numbers are
smaller, eg when the dword contains 123.
Anyway, I don't see more options for significant performance without
increasing code size. Of course specific sizes could be optimised, but
if you use other sizes too, total will increase.

You might be right. I adapted my programming style to embedded systems
long ago, avoiding stack use and blocking code. I tend to exhaust
flash and ram first...
