PIC to PIC master/slave SPI is probably slower then I2C. Since SPI doesn't wait for a slow slave, you have to use a slower SPI rate on the master or do some kind of hand shaking.
SPI is faster when using some other device as slave (such as external memory) since they can take the high speed. I don't think our I2C waits for a slow slave either at the moment, I'll have to test this again some day.
