I have no statistical information which shows that binary format is used more frequently then bcd notation. For a device which just shows the time and or date on an LCD I would think bcd is more obvious. Even though omitting '_bin' may save some typing I prefer to avoid ambiquous names, and having both _bcd and _bin is consistent with for example the print library (using _dec and _hex).
