Hi Jim, as far as I get it from here:
https://bioconda.github.io/guidelines.html#java you have to copy/install all tool-specific files to a tool-version-build-specific folder, ie. $PREFIX/share/$PKG_NAME-$PKG_VERSION-$PKG_BUILDNUM thus I guess all dependencies have to go there too. so maybe building from source is the way to go.
