Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) tidak lagi bertanggung jawab atas kehalalan roti produksi PT Talkindo Selaksa Anugerah itu. "Kami sampaikan kepada masyarakat, kami tidak bisa menjamin masyarakat lagi mengenai kehalalan roti BreadTalk," ujar Kepala Bidang Sertifikasi Halal LPPOM MUI Muti Arintawati.Muti, sebagaimana disampaikan okezone, Selasa (16/4) mengatakan, manajemen produsen roti milik pengusaha Johnny Andrean itu tidakmemiliki itikad baik untuk memperpanjang sertifikat kehahalan BreadTalk. Sertifikat kehalalan dari MUI yang dimiliki BreadTalk sudah kadaluarsa sejak September 2007 lalu. "Karena sertifikat itu hanya berlaku dua tahun. Kami sudah sampaikan beberapa kali surat peringatan tapi tidak direspons. Jadi kami tegaskan lagi kepada masyarakat Muslim bahwa MUI tidak lagi bertanggung jawab dengan kehalalan BreadTalk," tandasnya. BreadTalk didirikan pada tahun 6 Maret 2003 oleh George Quek, seorang wirausahawan yang sebelumnya memulai jaringan food court yang sukses di Singapura, Food Junction. Konsepnya berbeda dibandingkan dengan toko-toko roti lainnya pada umumnya, dengan memerhatikan penampilan toko yang dirancang agar terlihat eksklusif serta memperlihatkan dapur pembuatan roti kepada para pengunjungnya melalui kaca transparan. Tahun 2005, MUI pernah mengumumkan BreadTalk, Hoka Hoka Bento, dan Bir Bintang sebagai makanan dengan kategori subhat. "BreadTalk dan Hoka Hoka Bento (hingga kini) dinyatakan syubhat (meragukan) dan Bir Bintang 0 persen alkohol dinyatakan haram," demikian ujar Sekretaris Umum MUI, Dien Syamsudin, saat jumpa pers kala itu.
