Netscape Messenger 4.76 SMTP authentication not supported

Summary: Netscape Messenger 4.76 SMTP authentication not
                    supported
           Product: James
           Version: 2.0a3
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows NT/2K
            Status: NEW
          Severity: Enhancement
          Priority: Other
         Component: SMTPServer
        AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
        ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I had this problem with a commercial mail-server before. Netscape 4.76 seems to
use a somewhat different authentication protocol with SMTP. When trying to send
an e-mail with it, the smtpserver.log shows the following messages:

1024591441375 [INFO ] (smtpserver): Command received: AUTH PLAIN
AHRob21hB0aG9tYXM=

1024591441375 [ERROR ] (smtpserver): AUTH method PLAIN AHRob21hB0aG9tYXM= is an
unrecognized authentication type

While other client just cause this info line:
1024591355140 [INFO ] (smtpserver): AUTH method LOGIN succeeded
