Actually, the patch dates back to mid-August, but Andrei and Peter have been
redoing the entire connection handling, so the setSoTimeout didn't get
merged. The problem is that because of the bug in some versions of the
Win2K JRE, that setSoTimeout appears to be necessary regardless of any other
changes, or the socket immediately times out.

I posted the patch the other day. Somehow it did not commit. Anyway setting
the socket.setSoTimeout( int ) works great.
