Thanks for the response Noel. I'm coming around to the idea; it seems like you've put a lot of thought into this.
I guess my main worry is using JNDI where it's not a valid match to requirements. I remember a discussion on ant-dev where the merits of using JNDI for a VFS interface were discussed.
