FTP allows multiple connections to transmit/recieve parts of the same file,
pop3 doesn't allow that, it should [james deviates from the RFC in this,
AFAIK] lock during access and only, therefore, allow single connections per
user.
SMTP will open a single connection per message sent or got, But multiple
threads will increase the use of your bandwith only when load is high, not
when messages come or go singly.
However if connections, as has already been mentioned, are slow multiple
threads will prevent easy-to-deliver messages from being held up by the
difficult buggers.
