Update the MySQL JDBC driver to at least version 2.0.4, and add the
following to your /etc/mysql/my.cnf:
set-variable = max_allowed_packet=<max. mail size>M
BTW, if you use James 1.2.x, you'd still have a problem during POP
retrieval; logging in would take a very long time. So using James 1.3-dev
would be the solution.
