Hi,
Storing them in a db gives you potentially a number of advantages some of
which are listed below..
1/ it allows any application capable of connecting and using SQL to access
the information, such as a webmail application, account management, or
inserting messages directly into the spooler (instead of via SMTP)
2/ it allows the datastorage to be managed seperately from the mailserver,
you can locate it on another machine
3/ you can take advantage of some of the architectural features of
databases, such as scalability, fail-over.
4/ databases are better for dealing with large quantities of data, for
instance we are about to use James to collate replies and bounces to a
regular mailshot in excess of 2.5 million messages.
To do this we can have several instances of James feed mail into a single
central database (with hot backup) and create reports of summary and
specific information.

I've just seen serge's reply.. and agree that it makes housekeeping simpler
too, I use (at home) MySQL for James on a Linux box and "watch" the
repositories (just 'cos I'm a nosy geek!) using M$ Access "linked tables"
via ODBC.
