Have you investigated the Matcher/Mailet architecture.
James has been built with most of it's functionality contained within a
matcher for identifying some sort of pattern and then executing a mailet
with the logic once a pattern matches.
Look through the config.xml file to see the matcher/mailet configuration
and read through the source code for tons of great examples.

Once you have read through this and you have some specific questions,
let us know.
