Just an FYI on this problem,

It seems that James doesn't like running under the "server" VM for some 
reason, at least with the JavaService.  I changed to install the service 
to run with the "client" VM (hotspot) and it seems to be running happily.

Tomcat and JBoss are running fine under the server VM.

Probably James just happens to hit a bug in the server VM.
