I've only heard good things about James and OSX, at a guess there's a
problem with POP sessions not terminating, a QUIT causes mail to be deleted,
but pulling the plug on a connection, perhaps with a timeout, leaves them
behind.

Not knowing more about what patch you applied, and why you didn't upgrade
the whole to a pre-release 2.1 version I can't really say much more.
