I would need to double check this (and hopefully someone has changed it already), but I remember at one point that each thread of spool manager instantiates a new set of mailets, so if you have James configured to 3 spool manager threads and 3 remote delivery threads, you'll in fact have 9 threads doing remote delivery. I think this in part was why there is only 1 remote delivery thread by default (because it will be multiplied by the number of spool threads).Bill,James has several places with parallel behavior. The two primary ones involved in message processing are the spool manager and RemoteDelivery mailet. There are multiple spool threads. Each spool thread does process (using a LinearProcessor) a given message to completion within a particular processor. RemoteDelivery defaults to a single thread, but it is easy (I would say desirable) to add more delivery threads. I believe that this is the particular configuration item that you want to change. I certainly don't use just one thread in my production server.
Ideally this gets changed if not already since it's less than intituitive and seems avoidable.
