Hi, my husband and I are moving away and are giving a gift to a dear friend on Christmas right before we leave. We would like to inscribe a Japanese word or two on the back that will imply how meaningful the friendship is and that we feel very strongly about it and will always remember him.
I have spent this morning pouring over Japanese(Romanji)-English dictionaries. (What a beautiful language!) There are so many words for 'friend' that I have no idea where to begin. He knows Japanese so we don't want to say it wrong. Can someone tell me what some good options might be, and what the differences are between some of the words like atsuiyuujou, tomodachigai, chiguu, shinyuu, shinnotomo, iyuu, kouyuu, etc. Also looking at things like precious, dear, valuable... (tattoi/toutoi? ittoshii?) How is taisetsu typically used? Basically, strong words are fine, we just need to know more specifically how words are used so that we use what is appropriate to the context. Please feel free to email offlist if you prefer.
