I'm a beginner Japanese student and I am writing a report on
Valentine's Day in Japanese. Here is the oral report that I wrote.
Since I had to look up conjugations I haven't learned yet, most of
this is very bad. I would really appreciate any help, especially
using "to omotte" with past-tense verbs. Under each paragraph is what
I'm trying to say, in English. kanji o amari yomanai, kana de
kotaete. roomaji mo ii. Thank you!

Every February 14, Americans exchange honor sweets, flowers, and
presents. This is done to honor St. Valentine. Who is this mysterious
saint? Valentine's Day's history is very mysterious. Modern
Valentine's Day incorporates both Christian and Roman tradition.
Saint Valentine was a martyr. In Ancient Rome, he broke the law to
give young couples a Christian marriage. Some think that today
Valentine's Day is celebrated on 2/14 to commemorate St. Valentine's
death. In Ancient Roman times February was the official beginning of
spring. Lupercelia was a fertility festival. It was dedicated to the
god Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. Houses were cleaned and all
the town's unmarried women put their names in a big urn. Then each of
the bachelors would pick a name out of the urn. Marriage often
followed. In 498 AD Pope Gelasius prohibited the love lot because he
thought it was pagan. But Valentine's Day traditions of love
continued. February 14 was thought to be the beginning of the birds'
mating season. Because of that, it was thought to be a day of love.

The oldest valentine in existence was written by the Duke of Orleans
to his wife. In America the first manufactured valentine was made in
1840. It was an ornate valentine made with real lace and ribbon.
Today, according to the American Greeting Card Association, about a
billion valentines are sent every year. This makes Valentine's Day
America's second largest card holiday. Women buy 85 percent of all
Valentines. In addition to the US, Valentine's Day is celebrated in
Canada, Mexico, the UK, France, and Australia.

Valentine's Day is a lovers' day. On Valentine's Day in Europe they
have many traditions. On Valentine's Day eve young women pin bay
leaves under their pillows. Before sunrise, English and Italian women
stand by the window. They believe that the first man they see is
their soulmate. Also in England, Valentine's rolls are baked.
Everywhere on Valentine's Day, it's popular to go on a romantic
dinner-date with your loved one. Presents, flowers, and chocolate are
given to loved ones. Some people write a poem for their loved one.
Single people wish for dates. Children give fun valentines to their
classmates.
