Remembering Kanji is great, but first....

I suggest learning Katakana
& Hiragana alphabets first, go here to get them explained:
http://www.
zyx.com/chrisc/japanese/japanese.html
http://www.kanjisite.
com/html/start/kana/index.html

And you are going to need to learn how
to write them properly by hand:
http://members.aol.
com/writejapan/katakana/writutor.htm

Once you got those nailed down,
start with kanji and also go here for grammar:
http://www.extreme-
guides.com/g/Learn-Japanese/Basic-Grammar.html

You are going to need
this free japanese dictionary-program:
http://www.physics.ucla.
edu/~grosenth/c_download.html

Good Luck! :)
