I have seen the videos and, even though I do not like the fact that
they use rĂ´maji, they are good for a start. Still, I believe that a
purely auditory approach to learning Japanese is best. Even if a
Pimsleur course is not easily accessible, listening to something like
NHK online radio is convenient. At least there you get to familiarise
yourself with the sounds of Japanese. (Careful in how you pronounce
the R; it sounds more like an L to the English ear.) NHK even has
online Japanese lessons on their website and, if you have RealAudio,
you can listen to them.
The videos Kyle presented are good for beginners, but please don't
stick with reading as you pronounce; your pronunciation will not be
as accurate as when you use only your ears. On that point, I say play
the video and repeat the phrases with your eyes closed. You'll see
how accurate your pronunciation becomes when you use this method.
