The meanings are the same, but the mood implied by the words is completely
different.

Sumanai is informal almost to the point of being rude. It has a somewhat angry
or agitated feeling.

Sumimasen is the formal, polite, and common way to say "excuse me".

whats the difference between sumanai and sumimasen?

Cain s <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Kind of close synonyms. Kaeru is
usually used to refer
to returning to your place of origin (house, country,
city, etc), and in other Kanji compounds to mean
return. Modoru just means coming back to somewhere,
even if you you are not originally from there.
They are both equal in terms of politeness. There are
other verbs if you want to use them in Kenjogo or
Sonkeigo mode (o-kaeri-ni-naru, shiturei-suru, ukagau,
oide-ni-naru.
