So, I've made progress in terms of performance. My little benchmark
I've been using lately is

javac -verbose ArrayTest.java

where ArrayTest.java is in japhar/testsuite/java.lang.

The JDK1.1.8 compiled this .java file in 2441 ms (as reported by javac.)

When I started a few days ago, japhar was doing it in 7801 ms. abysmal.

I'm going to be checking in the last round of performance tweaks I'll be
making for a while, and japhar is now at 3880 ms.

There is substantial reason to believe that the majority of the rest of
the performance difference is based on the fact that we have no gc (yet)
hooked up. As soon as I address the problems petter is seeing with the
new object rep stuff, I'll attack the gc stuff again.

we're closing on them (interpreter-wise, anyway.)
