Two month ago I tried similar, also on Suse 6.1, also with problems.

Maybe a libtool problem ? Anyway after hours I got it compiled,
but I was not happy because it caught runtime errors related with
file-IO. Later I updated the system to Suse 6.2 and there it compiles
and runs ``out of the box''.
