The JVM won't even start if you don't have the required patches installed.
It'll come back and say they're missing.

Yes, it sounds like your JVM is crashing. This isn't directly an Apache
JServ issue since it is 100% pure. Check to make sure that your system has
all of the latest patches applied for it. I know that JDK 1.2 /requires/
certain patches on 2.6 just in order to work at all.
