Through experimentation, I am learning what resources need to be available
to the users and developers of Open Source projects. Things like CVS,
FAQ-O-Matic's, mailing lists are all turing out to be essential to the
success of an Open Source project. I compare this to what commercial
companies need in order to have a successful business. For example, they
need tech support phone numbers and people, databases of users, engineers,
marketing, etc.

This is a wonderful learning experience. I am starting to document a lot of
this sysadmin experiences at the newly redesigned
<http://www.working-dogs.com/> (it shows how good I am at Photoshop and 10
minutes of time <smile>). The first document will be on how to setup your
own cvs server in no time flat.

Hopefully, the Java Apache project will become a project that helps define
the guidelines for running other successful Open Source projects. ;-)

thanks,
