Cary,
   I am using the thin driver on my Linux because I didn't know that the OCI
would work on linux. Can you give me some information on setting up the OCI
driver (seems that I would need some Oracle client for linux since OCI would use
native calls). I am using Oracle 8.

Just a note, I never had your problem with the Thin driver, but as you said, it
is slow and not robust....
