I guess the following would work: You need two servlets, an upload and a show status servlet. The servlets should be called from two different frames (could be in the same page or as different windows). The first frame should contain your upload servlet and the other your 'StatusServlet'. The upload servlet should store the file size and already uploaded information to a place where the StatusServlet can reach it. In the frame where you show the status you should reload the page and show the current status until the upload is complete. The above have never been tested in reality and there are probably better solutions.
