Personally, I prefer to think of it as the "graduation" of Apache JServ.

I have been involved in the Apache JServ project for about 9 months,
working principally on a next generation version that would support the
2.1 servlet API and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. The results of the
work to date are visible in the CVS source tree if you extract branch
"JSERV1_1DEV". The best ideas from Apache JServ and those from the Tomcat
servlet engine that comes with the JSWDK will be merged, and the result
will be an even better servlet engine, still connected with Apache
(although not only Apache), still open source (the code contribution will
be under the Apache license), still open to contributions from all
interested developers, and still freely available on the web. I will
certainly be participating in the new project, and I'm sure other existing
Apache JServ folks will be too.

In addition, there's a couple other interesting factors that make the
future look pretty good:

* The servlet engine and JSP engines for the Jakarta project will be the
official reference implementations of these technologies, both for the
stand alone JSWDK type release that Sun produces, and as the servlet/JSP

part of the reference implementation for the Java2 Enterprise Edition
specs.
As such, conformance to current servlet and JSP standards will happen
  much more quickly.

* Sun and several other companies will be devoting significant paid
developer
hours to utilizing and enhancing the open source code base, to the
benefit
of everyone who uses this software.

I'm looking forward to seeing a servlet engine that does even better than
"rocks", a solid JSP engine that works well on top of it, and (above all)
a demonstration to commercial software developers that shows how working
with open source software can be a Good Thing for all.
