leave the package where it is ...
Go to
http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/gcc.html
and have a look around ... specifically at the install page ...
follow the instructions ...
before doing the final "make install" remove the gcc package that
you installed with "pkgrm <gcc package name>", and then do the
"make install", this will stop you causing problems by overwriting
the old gcc files ...
