don't give up on Freemarker. I had it running with JDK1.1 just sweetly.

could be. In a course on guy had a "beta"-version of the 1.1 collections and
it bombed out badly! (Was almost starting to pull out some of my hairs...)
Search for the official released 1.1 collection-library at sun and try that.
