You probably need a CODBASE="/the/folder/where/your/applet/lives"
in your <APPLET> tag.
The servlet and the applet are not dependent in any other way, but it is
silly to put your applet in your servlet directory, because servlet is a
mount point, obscuring access to the applet. put the applet in some other
folder.
