you bet they can! And, in my experience, it's the only way to get good
performance out of a jserver.
take a look at http://www.volano.com/server.html
and at http://www.volano.com/linux.html
they've been gracious enough to post a slew of performance tweaks. I think
there's a couple of posts on the ApacheJServ faqOmatic about how to increase
performance, too.
I have found that -ms32m -mx{(server's RAM) - (16M)} -ss32(ish) is a good
place to start tweaking. YMMV, of course.
