I should have specified in the original post that I already read this and
tried 
both solutions it suggested - no luck. Sorry about that. I set
wrapper.bin.parameters=-Xms64m -Xmx64m, as well as trying to preload the
servlets.

As I said in the original post, the "document contained no data" dialog
comes back INSTANTANEOUSLY. There is no long waiting period.

So I'm still at a loss.
