Shaun,

1. when jon referred to cgi he was talking about using Perl scripts and
such to 
   handle HTTP requests  (if that's what you were asking).
2. asking questions about JSP is a good way to start a religous war. See last
   several days posts on this topic.
3. applets - very special purpose, I think. too much to download, too limited 
   functionality. IMHO.

reference that has helped me alot is Professional Java XML Programming
with Servlets and JSP - Myers and Nakhimovsky - available at www.wrox.com -
could
probably get it cheaper at barnesandnoble or one of the other big ones.
