One option I forgot to mention that could work very well:

Use the cURL program (there's a link from the mod_ssl website) to generate
almost any HTTP/S request.  Wrap these calls in an appropriate shell script
and fire away.  This would be flexible if you need to navigate your website
(i.e., cache cookies), but you'd need to figure out how to obtain the
throughput metrics yourself (via the Apache access.log for example).
