Sure, but start and stop work fine. The problem occurs only if Apache tries
to start or restart JServ with the ApJServManual property set to off. That
means if the customer stops our software, which also stops the HTTP server
(Apache), he can't start them again because for some reason the automatic
start of JServ fails.
The only way to do this seems to be to have the script that starts Apache
for us also start JServ.

I'm considering setting up a cron job that checks for JServ every minute.
What would you recommend?
