Duration : 11+ Months Rate: $50/hr ***Phone screen followed by face to face interview*** Required skills: DOCSIS, CMTS - *****Both of these are MUST HAVES***** Job Description: BASIC FUNCTION Engineer, Access Transport Technologies will be a member of a team that has its focus on the strategic network planning for customer access and on the assessment of new transport technologies. As part of that mission, the team engages in proof-of-concept demonstrations, evaluates and certifies transmission equipment, and provides network reference architectures. This position’s primary responsibility is the practical evaluation of new transport solutions, which includes next generation Docsis-based transport solutions as well as all-fiber access networks. Working with Product Development, Operations and selected vendors, Engineer, Access Transport Technologies will be involved in the full evaluation cycle of network elements starting with the goal setting to the equipment installation to drafting test cases and their execution (including analysis and resolution of test failures), to interoperability certification, and finally to the technology hand-off to the operating entities. As a subject matter expert of Docsis, this position will be an called upon to contribute to setting standards and to drafting technical requirements documents. While the majority of work is of technical nature, the position entails project coordination and vendor management. In that regard, this position will be the central point of contact between the Client and the vendors on ongoing development efforts as they pertain to bug fixes or product enhancements. OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF THIS POSITION 1. Sets up of test environments, including equipment installation and configuration. 2. Develops use cases and test plans for functionality, performance, interoperability and reliability. 3. Executes test cases. 4. Performs root cause analysis of failed test cases and collaborates with vendors in identifying solutions for remedies. 5. Manages vendor interaction on customized feature developments and software revisions. 6. Checks vendor-provided codes for standards compliance. 7. Documents test and operating procedures, provides test reports for internal distribution. 8. Drafts technical requirements/ specifications for RFPs and contracts. 9. Manages lab test activities performed by third parties, such as vendors and consultants. 10. Assists in technology transfer to Operations in any capacity required. 11. Assists in trouble analysis and resolution of system failures in production. 12. Participates in operations network performance reviews. 13. Participates in network planning sessions 14. Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned. KEY MEASUREMENTS OF SUCCESS Financial Metrics: Adherence to budget guidelines; accurate forecast of funds for required material and equipment. Operating metrics: Adherence to project time-lines Qualitative metrics: Delivered results and reports are accurate and comprehensive. POSITIONS’s ORGAINZATION Number of employees reporting directly to this position: none Number of employees reporting indirectly to this position: tbd QUALIFICATIONS Management Skills Communication skills, written and verbal. Technical/Functional Competencies - Excellent understanding of packet-based networking principles and related protocols such as TCP/IP, USP, RTP, MPLS, RIP, OSPF, BGP4, SNMP. - Hands-on expertise with setting up, configuring and trouble shooting networks including the network elements like DHCP, DNS servers routers and firewalls. - Proficient in use of trouble shooting aids of the types of EtherPeek, Wireshark, Sniffers etc. - Working knowledge of HFC architectures. - Good understanding of Docsis specifications. - Intimate familiarity with RF circuitry design principles, RF modulation and RF transmission techniques. - Experienced in use of RF and optical measurement equipment (network analyzers, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, QAM analyzers). - Methodical problem solving skills and ability to lead small teams in joint trouble shooting efforts of complex problems. Key Experiences - Education level of BA/MA in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. - 5+ years of experience in IP network design and/or operations - Management of CMTSs and DOCSIS cable modem configurations. - Working experience with fiber optic and microwave electronics equipment. - Expertise in IP networking, intimate familiarity of relevant protocols. - Troubleshooting of complex IP network connectivity and protocol issues.
