Description:
Why:
* Unmaintained. Every commit to modules/transport/mail/src/main since 2015 is
collateral from a project-wide sweep (jakarta rename, SecurityManager removal,
package move, deprecated-API cleanups) or a GreenMail test bump. No functional
change in over a decade.
* Ships to everyone, enabled for nobody. No default axis2.xml configures a
mailto listener or sender, but modules/webapp/pom.xml depends on it, so the
module plus angus-mail -- roughly 780 KB of working mail stack -- is in every
axis2.war and in the binary distribution.
* SOAP over SMTP was a curiosity even at SOAP's peak. A request/response that
blocks the caller until a mailbox poll returns was not a deployment pattern.
* It is the only user of the In-Reply-To correlation machinery in
transport/base (SynchronousCallback and the callback table consulted in
AbstractTransportListener). That code carries FIXME comments from its authors
saying it does not belong there. Removing the transport lets it go too.
Removal touches: the module; the axis2-transport-mail dependency in
modules/webapp, modules/distribution and apidocs; SynchronousCallback,
BaseConstants.CALLBACK_TABLE and the correlation branch in
AbstractTransportListener; documentation under src/site/xdoc.
modules/transport/testkit stays: jms, http and udp keep 216 tests running on it
after mail's 150 are gone.
Sequence: 2.0.2 release-note deprecation, no code change; call for users on
dev@; remove in the next release. Same pattern as clustering (AXIS2-6097) and
WSDL 2.0
(AXIS2-6102), with a release of notice first since a transport is a bigger
compatibility statement.
