While I appreciate that you guys are trying to keep things going in a clear and
cohesive direction, from my point of view this is not a question of purity,
it's a question of practicality. I have to go and look for some sort of hackish
workaround, where a simple null check would have solved the problem, without
any detriment to anyone else.
