So how about a public IndexReader.flush() method so that one could also reopen 
readers that  were used for changes?

Usecase:

reader.deleteDocument()
reader.flush()
writer = new IndexWriter()
writer.addDocument()
writer.close()
reader.reopen()
reader.deleteDocument()
