I agree. I'm thinking at this point that neither should be needed. start()
should be done on creating the Scorer, and finish() should not be needed
because Scorers ought to be lightweight enough to not need closeable resources.
If one makes a custom Scorer one can always close it outside of Lucene.

nextDoc()/advance() weren't called.
Right, so this should mean the "firstTime" logic should be removable from all
core Scorers.
bq. Also, I've done the changes to BS and the code looks much more simpler.
