Uwe, thanks for opening this issue.
I'll collect the performance testing code from the earlier issue LUCENE-365 and
give the refactoring to subclass PriorityQueue<HeapedScorerDoc> a try.
That could take some time, but then I have not seen 3.1 mentioned yet...
